KAYA YOGA – YOGA FOR A CAUSE
Kaya Yoga studio in Davis, CA is holding an all-level Vinyasa class to raise funds and build awareness for the Adopt a Mother & Save her Child program.
The program is run by the Child in Need Institute (CINI) in Kolkata, and aims to prevent maternal and child malnutrition in rural villages. It focuses on the critical first 1000 days of a child’s life, from conception, till 2 years of age. This period is called the “window of opportunity” to build a solid foundation for the child’s health and prevent malnutrition from occurring at all.
How it works
Donors adopt an at-risk expectant mother identified by community health workers, in the early stages of pregnancy. The program provides all essential care to her such as nutritional supplements, regular check ups by the health worker, sonograms, emergency care if required and most importantly – nutrition and lifestyle counseling.
Once the child is born, it is given all the required care till the age of 2 such as immunizations, good nutrition, and lactation support to the mother among others.
This service not only prevents malnutrition from occurring (and thereby breaks a vicious cycle of malnutrition spanning generations), but also empowers women with knowledge to care for themselves and their children appropriately.
How you can help
A one-time payment of $300 covers the entire 1000 days of the program for one mother and her child. Donors receive 4 progress and outcome reports over 1000 days, with details and pictures of the mother and her child.
This class will be conducted by Emily Bay who is also our pre-natal yoga teacher. Our resident mandala artist who is also a pregnant mama has requested this fundraiser as her baby blessing. She hopes that our kula will come together to support this cause that is dear to her.
