A very happy new year to everyone!
I am happy to present the mothers we have been able to adopt from the funds raised by our fundraiser in Davis – Holiday Art with a Heart!
These are the first set of reports. The next report will arrive when their children are born, alongwith a picture of the mothers and newborns!
The mothers and their families will no doubt greatly benefit from all the facilities and services provided by the Adopt a Mother program. Pat yourselves on the back Davis – this has been possible only because of you
Hosnewara is 23 years old and lives with her husband and son. Both husband and wife are illiterate and the husband works as a tailor, earning Rs.2000 a month ($36). They are hoping for a female child this time.
Hosnewara is due on May 7th, 2013. She is an “at-risk” mother since she is malnourished herself. She weighs only 36 kgs (79lbs). She is also burdened with a lot of housework, including work like collecting firewood and fetching water from the nearby pond for the family’s use.
Hosnewara belongs to a joint family and lives with her in-laws. Her family members are sharing the workload during this time. She has had vomiting tendency, dizziness and nausea. She has been unable to eat much.
Hence the health worker has advised her to take food in small amounts but to eat more frequently.
She has also been advised to take easily available low cost nutritious food such as lentils and green vegetables, and to take sufficient rest. During the meetings, the CINI health workers have urged Hosnewara to get the Tetanus Toxide doses by the local health sub-centre and to take care of her personal hygiene.
Her first child was born in a hospital. She has been advised to opt for institutional delivery this time around as well.
We wish her the very best and are waiting for the arrival of her newborn!
Puja Sardar is a 25 year old housewife, pregnant with her second child. Her expected delivery date is May 1st, 2013. She and her husband Babusona Sardar (age 30) are hoping for a male child this time.
Babusona is a daily laborer who earns 1500 rupees a month, which is approximately $27. Under these circumstances, they are very much in need of all the support and counselling they can get. They are at risk for malnutrition due to their poor financial status and the fact that Puja has to do a lot of heavy lifting (literally and figuratively) around the house. She has been advised by the health workers to avoid hard physical work such as fetching firewood and take adequate rest.
Being a beneficiary of the Adopt a Mother program now, Puja has access to nutritional supplements, medical care, counselling, immunizations and community support for herself and her child when its born.
We wish her a smooth pregnancy and are eagerly awaiting her baby’s arrival in a few months!
